Add to basketFirst edition, first printing, inscribed by the author on the title page, "For Ilse & Kit Barker, with lots of love, Elizabeth Bishop (inscribed better late than never.) Bexley Hill, June 8th, 1976", with Ilse's ownership inscription on the half-title. Bishop first met the novelist Ilse Barker (1921-2006) and her husband, the painter Gordon "Kit" Barker (1916-1988), in 1950. "An intimate friendship developed which lasted till Bishop's death, with visits to the Barkers in England and later at Elizabeth's summer home in Maine" (Bishop, p. 233). The poet inscribed this copy while visiting the couple at their home in West Sussex. Ilse and Elizabeth shared a mutual passion for letter-writing, and Bishop wrote more than 250 letters to the couple, which are now held at the Princeton University Library. Questions of Travel is Bishop's third collection and includes poems based on her experiences living in Brazil, notably "The Armadillo" and "Sestina". It is also her first collection to include a short story, "In the Village". Elizabeth Bishop, One Art: Letters, 1994. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in purple, silver, and green, green endpapers, top edge pink. With dust jacket, designed by Adrianne Onderdonk. Spine ends bumped, small damp stains to cloth, extremities rubbed and toned, faint foxing to edges, traces of label removal to front pastedown, contents clean; jacket unclipped, nicks and creases to extremities: a very good copy in very good dust jacket.
