Item description from seller

New York: New York University Press, 1959. Very Good condition in a Very Good dust jacket (1 shallow cut). NOT price clipped ($5.00). A clean, square copy with sharp corners. Hinges are perfect. Top of spine has a short closed tear. Pages are clean, crisp, and unmarked. Bound in the original black boards. This book is from the library of Alonzo Church -- regarded by many as the greatest American logician of the 20th century. We were lucky enough to purchase several dozen books from his library at auction in New Jersey. Several of them contain his signature, or a presentation inscription to him. Unfortunately, this copy does not. However laid-in is a review request. The review slip is addressed to: "Book Review Editor, Journal of Symbolic Logic." Church not only founded the Journal of Symbolic Logic, but was an editor of its reviews section from 1936 until 1979. [Please check our inventory for other books from Prof. Church's library, including several signed by him. Alonzo Church (1903 - 1995) was professor of mathematics at Princeton University (1929-1967) and of mathematics and philosophy at UCLA (1967-1990). He was the founding editor of the JOURNAL OF SYMBOLIC LOGIC. Among his most influential contributions are Church's Theorem, Church's Thesis, and the Lambda Calculus. His work was of major importance in mathematical logic, recursion theory, theoretical computer science, and functional programming languages in general. Professor Church's creation of lambda calculus was the foundation for the LISP programming language and provided the semantic model for ALGOL. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, British Academy, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences]. [For more on Church's contributions, see items 250, 251, 321, 394, and 533 in Hook and Norman's ORIGINS OF CYBERSPACE, A LIBRARY ON THE HISTORY OF COMPUTING.] This book has contributions by Heinz Hartmann, Lawrence S. Kubie, Ernest Nagel, Abram Kardiner, Michael Scriven, Philipp Frank, Antony Flew, et. al. From the Dust Jacket: "[This] is the first time in the United States that a distinguished group of psychoanalysts has met with a distinguished group of philosophers of science in a free, critical, interchange of views on the scientific status of psychoanalysis." . First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good condition/Very Good DJ (1 shallow cut). 8vo. xiii, 370pp. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.

About Books [Genny and Michael Winne, proprietors, formerly of Parsippany, New Jersey) has been selling rare and out of print books since 1985. Besides book fairs and mail order catalogue, long-time collectors and dealers will remember our lengthy For Sale ads in the Antiquarian Bookman and similar magazines. Our inventory of more than 40,000 volumes is especially strong in the specialities listed, but contains fine books in a variety of other fields as well. Because most of our books are stored in protective boxes, rather than on shelves, they cannot be viewed as a whole. If you want to examine specific titles, please provide 24 hours notice and we will make them available for your inspection. Phone calls to (702) 750-2722 are welcome, but please only between the hours of 8am and 10pm, west coast time. Our phone is a landline that cannot receive texts.
