Item description from seller

FULL TITLE: Primitive Papermaking: An Account of a Mexican Sojourn and of a Voyage to the Pacific Islands in Search of Information, Implements, and Specimens Relating to the Making & Decoration of Bark-Paper._____DESCRIPTION: Folio 17 H x 12-1/4 W inches (442.4 H x 30.6 W cm), 48 pp. Limited, signed edition, no. 163 of 200 copies. Edition consists of a series of untrimmed folders and loose sheets laid within a one half linen and paper covered three-sided portfolio with six cloth ties, printed paper label on front cover, made by Peter Franck. Includes a sepia photogravure frontispiece of Mountain House, 48 numbered text pages printed letterpress from handset type plus 29 un-numbered leaves with mounted specimens and captions. Specimens include original photographs, illustrations, facsimiles, 2 bark specimens, 31 bark paper specimens (some over 100 years old) and 8 paper facsimiles made by Dard Hunter where original specimens were not available. Signed by Dard Hunter in the colophon._____CONDITION: Small stain to cloth at lower front corner, all six ties present and intact. Ornamental ex-libris on front pastedown resulting in light offset to blank folder page, one paper specimen with two shallow creases, light offset to title page from verso page. Occasional light offsetting from specimens (normal) but foxing and toning absent. Strong near-fine (NF) condition._____DISCUSSION: This is a groundbreaking early work by Dard Hunter, his first foray into non-Western papermaking. The specimens are quite rare, accumulated over a ten-year period. Included are samples from Java, the Otomi Indians of Mexico, Hawaii, Fiji, Tonga Islands and Samoa. One of the very few specimen books pertaining to barkcloth papers (tapa) of the South Seas. This is also a tour de force of private press craftsmanship with Dard Hunter using his own hand-cut and hand-cast type on his own handmade paper. Hunter notes that " typographically this is the most elaborate edition issued from this private press." The edition was completely sold out within a month with a large number going directly to institutions. A rare and desirable book of historic significance since this papermaking craft has already disappeared in some places he visited and some of the specimens are quite old. Dard Hunter's rarest and most desirable book.______NOTE: Domestic shipping cost with UPS Ground is $35. International shipping cost with USPS International Priority Mail to Canada, the United Kingdom is $100. Shipping cost to more distant locations may incur additional cost.…
