Add to basketFirst Edition (Number Line to 1). Signed and inscribed by the author, Senator Joseph Lieberman, on the second front end paper. The inscription reads 'To Alan + Phyllis-- my Madison constituents-- with thanks and every good wish-- J Lieberman, USS/Conn.' As you can see from the photos, the covers are exceptionally clean. They have very little wear, a tiny bit of crinkling at the top edge of the spine and a small scratch on the front cover. The edges and corners look terrific. The silver lettering on the spine is very bright. The book is square and solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout. The covers are very tightly bound but do bow out a little. The interior of the book is in terrific shape. The pages are exceptionally clean. I scrolled through them a few times without finding any instances of soiling. That includes the white inside covers and end papers. I found only one small crease at the top corner of one side of a page. I didn't see any other creasing. There are no markings. No attachments. And with the exception of the senator's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I've had it in a fitted protective cover for as long as I've owned the book. The jacket is very clean. I don't see any tears. There doesn't appear to be any conspicuous wear. The flaps are also very clean. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. From the dust jacket: 'In a vigorous defense of public life, Senator Joseph Lieberman, one of the most articulate and respected of our politicians, defines the duty, the honor and the privilege of public life in the face of Americans' perennial cynicism about it. Lieberman asks fundamental questions about what standards of behavior should be expected of politicians in the sharply partisan, big-money search-and-destroy atmosphere politics today. Who should set the standards? Is there room for a public figure to "be human," to "make mistakes"? Is there a line beyond which the personal behavior of a public official is nobody's business? Do citizens have an obligation to understand and determine the responsibilities of public life? Drawing widely from his own experience as a politician and his pride in public service, Lieberman makes a passionate, hopeful argument for the value of public life-- its place and necessity in our democracy and our need for more Americans to embrace it if we are to sustain our self-government.'.
