It is the time of the Civil War in England. Nathaniel Ponder is imprisoned in Northampton Gaol for preaching his Puritan beliefs, leaving his motherless children, John, Beth and Charley to fend for themselves. It is to be a tough year. Bailiff Foggarty longs to evict the family if they do not pay their rent, but the children are determined to survive. They go to work - John as a farm labourer, Beth as a servant in the Manor House and even little Charley spends his days in the fields as a bird-scarer! The children live on a knife-edge, often not knowing where their next meal will come from. Village characters include a suspected witch, a pedlar, the grammar school master, a band of travelling players and a young tinker whose name will later become famous - John Bunyan. With careful research, sensitive use of material and some enchanting descriptions of the changing seasons, the author has created a vivid pageant of seventeenth-century rural life.
