In addition, the volume contains an original signed pencil portrait drawing on the flyleaf, dated: Paris 13 / 12 / 21 signed Marcel Huard The drawing is a contemporary addition and represents an early dated work by the French artist, enhancing the cultural and material interest of the volume. Condition is good, with: Wear, creasing, and some chipping to wrappers Toning and spotting throughout Minor handling marks consistent with age Internally complete, with inscription and drawing clear and well preserved Edgardo Ubaldo Gentas Les Poilus forms part of the wider literary response to the First World War, reflecting the international reach of its cultural impact beyond Europe. This copy gains significance through its direct connection to José Santos Chocano, one of the most prominent literary figures of the Spanish speaking world in the early twentieth century. The inscription, dated Montevideo in 1925, situates the book within the broader intellectual networks linking European and Latin American literary circles during the interwar period. The presence of a signed and dated portrait drawing by Marcel Huard, executed in Paris in 1921, adds a further layer of interest, combining literary and artistic elements within a single volume. Taken together, the book represents a multi-layered cultural artefact, linking text, author, recipient, and contemporary artistic practice across both Europe and South America.
