First edition of Clement C. Moore’s Poems, containing the first appearance in book form under his name of “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” the beloved Christmas poem known to the world as “The Night Before Christmas.” Octavo, publisher’s plain brown boards, rebacked to style in modern brown cloth with a printed paper spine label. Presentation copy, inscribed by Moore on the half-title, “Mrs De Kay with the respects of the author. Mar.1846.” The recipient, Janet Drake de Kay, was the daughter of the poet Joseph Rodman Drake and the mother of the painter Helena de Kay Gilder; her daughter’s faint pencil signature appears on the front free endpaper, with the bookplate of Helena’s husband, the poet and editor Richard Watson Gilder, below. “A Visit from St. Nicholas” appears on pages 124 to 127. In very good condition, with the hinges repaired and the front hinge reinforce, the front free endpaper with a tear near the gutter and a chip, the half-title with a tear to the lower gutter, several leaves with edgewear or mild chipping, the text a bit toned with occasional thumb soiling. A remarkable presentation copy of the book that gave America its enduring image of Christmas and Santa Claus. Clement Clarke Moore (1779-1863) was a professor of Oriental and Greek literature at the General Theological Seminary in New York and the author of the poem that shaped the modern image of Christmas. ?A Visit from St. Nicholas,? better known as ?The Night Before Christmas,? first appeared anonymously in the Troy Sentinel in 1823, and this 1844 collection, Poems, marks its first appearance in a book published under Moore?s own name. The poem fixed in the popular imagination the figure of a jolly, sleigh-driving Santa Claus with eight named reindeer, and has been called ?arguably the best-known verses ever written by an American? (Burrows and Wallace, Gotham: A History of New York City to 1898). Few American poems have had so lasting an influence on how Christmas is celebrated.…
