INSCRIBED First Edition Hardcover- black cloth w/ intact gilt on spine- in VERY GOOD Condition in VERY GOOD unclipped Dustjacket showing significant edge wear, some edge tears. INSCRIBED in year of publication on front free endpaper: "To Nat Schmulowitz- to whom much of the material in this book will be quite familiar- With esteem and cordial greetings- Alexander Lindey- July 1952." ALSO TIPPED-IN on front pastedown: Typed Letter Signed on "Law Offices of Alexander Lindey, New York" Letterhead to Nat Shmuowitz, Esq., San Francisco, apologizing for failing to autograph the book which was previously sent. Rear pastedown shows tipped-in clipping: "Other Men's Words" by William Fitzgibbon, showing some offsetting. Otherwise INTERIOR very clean & tight. ALEXANDER LINDEY (1896-1981) was a lawyer & author. He was counsel for the American Newspaper Guild and the Newspaper Guild of New York. Signee NAT SCHMULOWITZ (1889-1966), a nationally known attorney, civic leader and bibliophile. Although he specialized in probate and corporate law, Mr. Schmulowitz earned a national reputation in 1921 with his successful defense of Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle. Mr. Schmulowitz was a member of the Library Commission of San Francisco for seven years and served as president of that body in 1944. On April Fool’s Day, 1947, as a measure of his interest in the Library, he donated ninety-three volumes, including an edition of the Hundred Merry Tales, towards the establishment of the Schmulowitz Collection of Wit and Humor (SCOWAH). Today, SCOWAH is one of the most extensive collections of its kind in the world, numbering at present over 20,000 volumes and 160 periodical titles, as well as a variety of other materials, in more than 35 languages and dialects, and spanning more than four centuries. Housed in the Book Arts & Special Collections Center of the San Francisco Public Library, SCOWAH is one of the Library’s truly unique research collections. An unusual artifact spanning law and humor.
