This is an exceedingly rare, author-inscribed copy of "The Piling of Tophet - A LUNATIC'S PROBLEM for the World to Solve" by John T. Fowler ("Patient in the Hudson River State Hospital"). 1879 1st edition; Henry T. Cornett; New York. Softcover with 134 numbered pages, and an "Errata" page at the back. "Presented with the compliments of the author" is written in ink at the top edge of the front cover. The book provides a rare, detailed, first-hand account of what it was like to experience psychiatric conditions and institutionalization in 19th-century America. Born in Flushing, Long Island in 1843, Fowler began experiencing delusions and auditory hallucinations at the age of 29. He was subsequently committed to the Hudson River State Hospital in Poughkeepsie, New York, where he spent seven years. He wrote the manuscript just one year before his release. Fowler’s text is highly valued by modern historians and psychologists because it describes personal experiences that align perfectly with concepts defined much later in psychiatric history, such as paranoia, thought broadcasting, thought perseveration, and apophenia (the tendency to perceive meaningful connections between unrelated things). Alongside his life narrative, Fowler included five distinct chapters mapping out his personal life philosophy, deep perspectives on religion, a direct record of his dreams, and a detailed examination of what it actually felt like to hear voices. The title references Tophet (or Topheth), a biblical location associated with chaos, destruction, and an unquenchable fire pit. Fowler used this striking historical imagery as a metaphor for the intense mental torment, alienation, and "madness" he felt trapped in, presenting his internal psychological struggle as a puzzle for society to understand and solve. Though the book lay largely forgotten for nearly 145 years with only a few original copies surviving, it was recently rediscovered and republished as an annotated historical resource by Lucetia Press. Condition: Author's inscription written in ink at the top edge of the front cover. "Flushing - Jamaica page 17" is written in pencil at the top edge of the front cover. Small bits of paper have chipped away on the spine, at the bottom-right corner of the front cover, and at the top-left corner of the back cover. The front cover has pulled from the spine 2.5" down from the top. The back cover is firmly attached. All text pages are firmly attached. Page 28 has a small tear at the outer edge. The pages are lightly toned, though not brittle, and are mostly clean with the exception of a tiny, dark stain that appears at the bottom edge of page 86 and continues to the end of the book (ending at page 134). Overall the book is in Good condition.…
