From the Author:
Jane Kurtz talks about how ONLY A PIGEON came to be a book.
I grew up in Ethiopia, where my parents worked for the Presbyterian church for 23 years. Later, my only brother went back to Ethiopia to teach in a girls' school in Addis Ababa. One day, the gate guard at the school introduced him to a shoe-shine boy who worked outside the school compound. Chris took Andualem under his wing and hired him to work around the yard and do errands. In a kind of exchange, Andualem taught my brother to raise pigeons. When Chris came back to the U.S. and told me about this encounter, I was so struck by the way that kids who have nothing--not even a toy or a change of clothes--still find ways to be playful and to care for other living things. After theh book was under contract, Chris and the artist, E.B. Lewis, spent their own money to go to Addis Ababa to do the art research, making this the only one of my books about Ethiopia to have every single illustration detail exactly right. This spring, I was invited back to speak in three schools in Ethiopia and had a chance to meet Andualem, who is now in the university in Addis Ababa.
