Fine internally: pages are clean and bright throughout. Bound in full tree-marbled leather; gilt lettering and decorations; marbled endpapers, with all page edges marbled to match. First Edition. Inscribed by author on second free page: "In memory of the educational work, done by the late Rev. W.W.S. Escott, Trinity College Oxford, headmaster of King Henry VII's School, Coventry. This volume is given by its author, his brother, T.H.S. Escott, as a prize for the best answers to questions, set to test general intelligence and literary taste. Brighton, Midsummer 1901. T.H.S. Escott." Thomas Hay Sweet Escott (1844 - 1924) was an English journalist and editor. He was a lecturer at King's College London from 1865 to 1873, and editor of The Fortnightly Review from 1882 to 1886. During the last 35 years of his life Escott lived in semi-retirement in Brighton, in poor health. In 1895 he had partially recovered, and he wrote over 100 articles and a number of books before his death. Among Escott's close friends were Wilkie Collins and Charles Reade.
