OSBORNE, John A Patriot for Me London: Faber and Faber, 1966 8vo, publisher's red cloth, lettered in gilt to spine; together in black and white dustwrapper (unclipped, 13s 6d net to front flap), the cover image showing a photograph by 'Dominic'; pp. [viii], 9-128; a very good copy, lightly compressed to spine tips with the odd dink to the outer edges; faint toning to the text block; marks from tape residue affecting the front paste-down and endpapers; as well as half title; the wrapper also very good, light rubbing, creasing and shelfwear, mostly affecting the head of spine; a bright example. First edition of Osborne's 1965 play based on the true story of the life of Alfred Redl. This copy formerly in the possession of Harry Vaughan Philips, with his book plate to the front paste-down. With this example come two letters, the first once affixed to the front free endpaper with tape (now detached), signed by John Osborne to Captain Philips and dated the 11th August 1965. "I'm so glad you enjoyed the play", he writes, "It will be published by Faber and Faber - but not until January I'm afraid. They always seem to take a long time." The second letter, a TLS loosely laid in, is also addressed to Philips, this time signed in blue ink from Maximilian Schell, who played the role of Redl in the 30th June - 14th August performances in 1965 at the Royal Court Theatre in London. "Your thoughts are right" he notes, "it is a difficult part, but I feel that the performance is being appreciated, I am happy that I had the opportunity to do it". A controversial play which follows the experiences of Alfred Redl, an officer of the Imperial and Royal Army of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, who was blackmailed into becoming a spy for Tsarist Russia because of his homosexuality. The debut performances in 1965 proved "too sexually transgressive" for the Lord Chamberlain's office, forcing the theatre to change from a public theatre to a private member's club. Rarely performed even today due to the large cast required, the play features an infamous drag ball as its climactic scene. An interesting association copy.…

Founded in January 2023, Fold the Corner specialises in rare, beautiful, and eclectic books, letters and manuscripts from the 18th to 21st centuries. Areas of interest include Philosophy, Literature, Counterculture and Modern First Editions (from 1900 to the present day). I also work closely with the Canadian writer and illustrator Charles van Sandwyk, and carry a constant supply of his books, artworks and etchings, and am one of the few dealers in the UK to do so.

Right of withdrawal
If you are a consumer you can withdraw from the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.
Information regarding the right of withdrawal
Statutory right to withdraw
You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to Fold the Corner Books, Milford, United Kingdom, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
- The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
- The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.
Shipping terms
SHIPPING AND DELIVERY
We will pack all items carefully for shipping. We will dispatch all items as quickly as possible, but in any case within 7 working days of clearance of payment in full (unless the item is subject to an Export Licence or we notify you otherwise). All items shipped by us will be fully insured. We will advise you of the delivery options and likely cost of shipping at the time of purchase. For lower-value items, we will usually use a tracked or signed for service from the Royal Mail; for higher value, international or urgent items, we will usually use a courier. Please let us know if your order is urgent. Shipping will be at your expense unless agreed otherwise. We charge £10 for UK delivery, and £30 for the rest of Europe. For worldwide shipping, or for goods weighing more than 1kg, we will quote for packing and insurance. Should you wish to make your own arrangements for collection or shipping, please contact us.
