Green marble paper to boards with dark green leather at outer corners of boards and spine. Gilt decorated spine, with raised bands. Gilt lettering. Red labels.Rubbing to extremities and small loss to leather labels on spine of Volumes I and III. Page edges are 'marbled'. Previous owner's book plate inside front cover of all three volumes. Light spotting on prelims and end papers. Green ribbon page markers present on all three volumes. Illustrated with numerous drawings within the text. The first spare page of Volume I bears the ink inscription 'Corrected A.D. 1863 by The Author'. The exact relevance of this inscription is not immediately apparent. Each volume is dated 1848 and there are no 'corrections' within the volumes. 'The Author' is written in the manner usually ascribed to that of the actual author, not as a general reference that the work has been corrected by the author. A very scarce three volume set in a first edition, although it has gone through many recent reprint editions. 343pp, 298pp and 311pp.
