Item description from seller

First edition of this intensely human and incredibly detailed account of the war in the Pacific written by a naval officer and inscribed by him: "Hope you enjoy reading this book! Frank R. Corkin, Jr." "Corkin's letters to a small hometown newspaper tell not only his story, but represent the stories of thousands of other young men in the war, which helped the families to see, through his eyes, what their sons and husbands were meeting up with. Much talk, in between shore bombardment and sub-chasing action, of movies, popular singers, natives on Micronesia, haircuts, the tragedy of the five Sullivan boys lost in action, strikes at home and their effect on servicemen. with the one word loneliness summing up the effect the war had on everyone" (Coleman & Neal, Great Stories of World War II, 30). Book near-fine, with interior quite nice and only a couple minor spots of rubbing and soiling to cloth. Dust jacket extremely good, with light wear and a couple small tape repairs to extremities and minor toning to spine. A desirable inscribed copy.…
