8vo. 199pp. Inscribed by author “Gardiner Kellogg with the warm regards of the author”. In the original brown cloth, blind ruled, gilt lettering and image of Powhatan on spine. Shelf worn, spine extremities frayed. Some loss of cloth at spine hinges. Lower inner margins and lower blank margins with damp stains. Pressed leaves between p.104-105 have darkened the gutter. Scattered foxing. Collated, complete. Good. An epic poem about the life of Chief Powhatan, father of Pocahontas leader of the Powhatan people. The author, Seba Smith, was best known for creating the character Jack Downing, a popular fictional political commentator of the 1830s. The book did not achieve the success Smith had hoped for. In his lengthy July 1841 book review in Graham's Magazine, Edgar Allan Poe absolutely shredded the work and the author, saying Smith "never committed a greater mistake in his life than when he fancied himself a poet". Poe praised the physical aspects of the book saying that it’s “handsomely bound. Its printing is clear beyond comparison. Its paper is magnificent, and we undertake to say (for we have read it through with the greatest attention) that there is not a single typographical error in it, from one end to the other.” But went on to say “no man with both brains and conscience should proceed [in reading the book]. In truth, a more absurdly flat affair — for flat is the only epithet which applies in this case — was never before paraded to the world, with so grotesque an air of bombast and assumption.” Poe ended with saying “we assure him his book is a very uncommon book. We never saw any one so uncommonly bad”. Rare book. Sabin 84153 [Indians of North America-Virginia].…
