First Edition of Scraps No. 1 and "Second Edition" of Phrenology Exemplified. A PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AMERICAN ARTIST WILLIAM LAUREL HARRIS. With dozens of illustrations by David Claypool Johnston presented several per plate, those in SCRAPS NO.1 with guards. Oblong folio, both books with the original printed front wrappers intact, the two now preserved in a full cloth binding with paper cover label. 19, [1], 4 pages of plates; 4 pages of plates, both with the original front printed wrapper in buff and yellow. An essentially fine copy of each scarce item now nicely presented in a custom cloth binding with just a bit of age to the tips and corners. FIRST EDITION OF SCRAPS AND "SECOND" OF PHRENOLOGY, BOTH RARE. WE KNOW OF NO EARLIER PRINTINGS OF PHRENOLOGY. A PRESENTATION COPY FROM WILLIAM LAUREL HARRIS TO HIS AUNT. Johnston was considered the American Cruikshank, and his lithographs were considered to be among the best done in America. William Laurel Harris painted murals, designed the decorative elements and continred the work of John LaFarge at the Paulist Fathers Church in New York City. The church was called "an experiment in democracy in American art" by the order's founder and other contributors to its decoration included Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Stanford White, Frederick MacMonies and Bela Platt. Harris had assisted Edwin Blashfield during the painting of the dome of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. He was also an editorial writer for the New York Times. Scraps No. 1 contains some of the earliest depictions of suffragettes after the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848. There is an entire plate with eight illustrations lampooning women taking part in what were previously considered to be manly pursuits or pleasures. Also depicted is what is considered the first illustration of an American antique shop, with the title "An Old Curiosity Shop". Phrenology Exemplified and Illustrated, issued in 1837 contains 19 pages of text and 4 pages of illustrations with 39 images depicted. Seller Inventory # 27893
