1st Printing. Signed. 187 pages. Published in 2004. The author/graphic artist's second memoir in graphic novel form. The sequel to her breakthrough debut, "Persepolis". One of the greatest books of our time. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out upon publication. The book remains available in innumerable subsequent printings and editions. The First Edition is now very rare. A dazzling production by Marjane Satrapi and Jean-Christophe Menu: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial hard boards with black titles on spine, as issued. Graphic art and text by Marjane Satrapi. The production values are outstanding in every respect. In pictorial DJ, which has a die-cut in the center, and white titles on the cover and spine, as issued. The die-cut reveals Marjane Satrapi (as depicted by her) on the hard boards. Presents, in its true First Edition format, Marjane Satrapi's "Persepolis 2: The Story of A Return". Her second masterpiece. Marjane Satrapi first dazzled us with "Persepolis", her memoir-in-comic-strip about growing up in Iran. Then, in 1984, Satrapi started a new life in Europe. Once there, she "faced the trials of adolescence. While she soon carved out a place for herself among a group of fellow outsiders, she continued to struggle for a sense of belonging. So Marjane returned to Iran. Her difficult homecoming forced her to confront the changes both she and her country have undergone. The state-sanctioned repression eventually led her to ask herself whether she has a future in Iran" (Publisher's blurb). "Persepolis 2" is a searing condemnation of the human cost of radical Islamic fundamentalism: That it is petty and cruel at the same time. An absolute "must-have" title for Marjane Satrapi collectors. This copy is very prominently, beautifully, and uniquely signed and inscribed in black pen-marker on the title page by the author: "To - Thank you for having come, Marjane Satrapi". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The recipient, who is named, was a friend of the author, and cannot be named here. She went to the book event, and was gratefully acknowledged as such by Satrapi, who remained self-effacing and gracious all her writing life to her colleagues and fans. This title is a great book. This is the only such signed and inscribed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (American) available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. It is one of the most beautiful signed copies of the book we have ever seen. Please note: Almost ALL other copies available online are in innumerable subsequent printings even if their dealers don't say so. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare, one-of-a-kind signed copy thus. "Persepolis: The Story of A Childhood" was selected by the New York Times as one of "The 100 Best Books of The 21st Century". One of the greatest writer/graphic artist/filmmakers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO MARJANE SATRAPI'S "PERSEPOLIS: THE STORY OF A CHILDHOOD" TITLE IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0375422889.…

- Book 2 of 2: Persepolis
In 1984, Marjane flees fundamentalism and the war with Iraq to begin a new life in Vienna. Once there, she faces the trials of adolescence far from her friends and family, and while she soon carves out a place for herself among a group of fellow outsiders, she continues to struggle for a sense of belonging.
Finding that she misses her home more than she can stand, Marjane returns to Iran after graduation. Her difficult homecoming forces her to confront the changes both she and her country have undergone in her absence and her shame at what she perceives as her failure in Austria. Marjane allows her past to weigh heavily on her until she finds some like-minded friends, falls in love, and begins studying art at a university. However, the repression and state-sanctioned chauvinism eventually lead her to question whether she can have a future in Iran.
As funny and poignant as its predecessor, Persepolis 2 is another clear-eyed and searing condemnation of the human cost of fundamentalism. In its depiction of the struggles of growing up--here compounded by Marjane's status as an outsider both abroad and at home--it is raw, honest, and incredibly illuminating.
