SIGNED & INSCRIBED by the author, with THREE ADDITIONAL POEMS - two pasted in & a third laid in. The FIRST POEM (typed & signed) is titled "Ferry Ideas - to K.H.", consists of two stanzas (14 lines), & is affixed to ffep. The SECOND POEM (handwritten in black ink in French) consists of two stanzas (10 lines), is inscribed at conclusion "To Katharine Hooker with all the devotion of [floridly signed]", dated "12.xii.14" (which precedes publication of this book), & is affixed to verso of ffep. The THIRD POEM [laid in] (printed & signed) consists of one stanza (5 lines), & is SIGNED in blue ink at conclusion "by F. Mortimer Clapp". Also with Clapp's printed pictorial BOOKPLATE affixed to front pastedown, plus original b&w PHOTOGRAPH (presumably of Clapp in military uniform) pasted to title page. The poem on page 28 is dedicated by the author to the recipient of the book (with author's note in pencil to contents page: "To K.H."). Author's first book of poetry, first published April 1916. "Frederick Mortimer Clapp (1879-1969) was the first Director of the Frick Collection in Manhattan, New York, as well as a poet, & art historian. Clapp was the organizing Director at the Frick Collection from 1931 to 1935 & the first Director from 1935 to 1950. He taught at City College of New York. Clapp also worked at Princeton University. He married Maud Caroline Ede (Clapp) (1876-1960), an artist from Florence. In 1909, Frederick began studying at the Sorbonne to receive his PhD, & began publishing poetry in 1916." The recipient of the author's inscription, Katharine Putnam Hooker (1849-1935), was "an American travel writer, philanthropist, & socialite. Katharine Putnam was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A few years after she was born, her father Samuel sent for his wife & daughter to join him in San Francisco, where he was living during the California Gold Rush. Their ship sank in the San Francisco Bay, & four-year-old Katharine was among the passengers rescued by a whaling ship. In 1862 young Katharine survived a second shipwreck at Alcatraz Island. As a girl she was a close friend of Alice Howe Gibbens, who later married William James". Bound in publisher's original green paper covered boards backed by cream cloth spine with printed paper title label. No dustjacket. Light stain to portion of upper rear cover, small pen mark to front cover, otherwise a nice clean tight solid hardcover copy. 90pp. Scarce & unique signed presentation copy with additional related items.
