A nicely-executed biographical study of early twentieth-century liberal Oswald Garrison Villard, by Wells College professor D. Joy Humes, who did her research pursuant to a grant from Syracuse University. Villard was a leading liberal figure in a time when it wasn't that easy to be that; he became editor of The Nation in 1918, by which time he had already assisted in the founding of the NAACP, had marched in the 1911 Suffrage parade in New York City, had aggressively criticized the jailing of socialist Eugene V. Debs, and had been an uncompromising pacifist during the war years. As editor of The Nation, he reinforced virtually every liberal cause during his fifteen years there. As a signed copy in jacket, quite scarce. Please see scans. L51n. Seller Inventory # 000752
