DESCRIPTION: Folio size 17 H x 12 W inches (42.2 x 29.4 cm), 71 pp. Limited edition, no. 112 of 200 copies. Printed letterpress on hand-made paper with hand-set type, the last Mountain House edition using proprietary type hand-cast by Hunter. The hand-made paper was also made by Hunter at his papermaking mill in Lime Rock CT. Includes 15 tipped-in specimens of paper made from bamboo, mulberry, china grass and mitsumata, 3 specimens of bark, and five photogravures. Illustrated with Hunter's own drawings including 20 in black-and-white, one in reddish-orange and eleven in color plates (one folding). Bound by Peter Franck in half-linen & patterned paper over boards. Printed label on front cover. Book is protected with an archival clear Grafix Dura Lar dust wrapper, then housed in its original beige cloth-edged slipcase._____CONDITION: Near fine/borderline fine. Binding well-preserved. No markings, ex-libris, etc. Text block square and firm, all hinges intact. All samples present with a small tear in mulberry paper specimen (pg. 42) and a few small holes in the blank periphery of mulberry paper specimen (pg. 45) - see last two photos. These were probably present at the time they were collected by Dard Hunter. Text pages bright and white throughout without foxing or foxing. Slipcase borderline fine with a few a tiny areas of trivial rubbing to the black paper, beige cloth edges clean. All seams and corners intact. _____DISCUSSION: This book has a unique production process in which Dard Hunter oversaw every stage of production at Mountain House Press. He made the paper, cast his own proprietary metal type, wrote the text, designed the book, did the typesetting and hand-printed it. The tipped-in paper samples acquired over a ten year period are remarkable, dating from the 14th through 18th centuries, from China, Japan, Persia and Tibet, a "veritable museum of old papermaking" (Dard Hunter). Of note, 50 of the 200 copies were destroyed by fire (the Veatchs) and many of the remaining copies are in institutional hands. A scarce and desirable copy._____NOTE: Due to the folio size, domestic shipping cost with UPS Ground is $35. International shipping cost with USPS International Priority Mail to Canada and the United Kingdom is $85. Shipping cost to more distant locations may incur additional cost.…
