Add to basketFirst Edition, 1930, signed and dedicated by the author to Ernest C.Savage. Very good indeed in publisher's blue cloth with cream printed title labels on the spine and front board. No d.j. The spine label is complete but sunned. 8vo. 228pp., frontis. plus 12 b/w plates., appendix, bibliog. Binding square and tight. All corners sharp. Slight shelf wear to top and bottom of spine. A few spots of foxing to backs of plates with some offsetting to following pages. Boards clean and the page block is fresh and unmarked. A very nice copy. In the foreward, Dulles wrote: In this story of the old China trade I have attempted to recapture something of the spirit of adventure and daring which at the close of the Revolution sent the young merchant seamen of the Atlantic seaboard throughout the length and breadth of the Pacific. Many of these voyages had as their objective other ports than Canton, but it was the China trade which gave greatest proof of the resourcefulness and ingenuity of the Yankee traders. Furthermore, it had a significant result in the opening up of political relations with the Chinese Empire. I have brought the story to a close with the Treaty of Wanghia, which was signed in 1844. It ushered in a new era in our trade with China; it also brought to an end its most romantic period. Note: The historian and journalist Foster Rhea Dulles ( 1900-1970) , was first cousin to both John Foster Dulles, who served as Secretary of State under President Eisenhower and Allen Dulles, head of the CIA. He wrote several books on the subject of Sino-American relations. This was the first, and also his first published work.
