xvi, 607 p. 21 cm. Full leather. Bound upside down. Gild impressing and burgundy spine label. A few scuffs. Marks on endpapers where labels removed. Inscribed by Maseres as "Baron" on front free endpaper, from his position as "cursitor baron of the exchequer." Title continues: "Extracted Parly From the Publick newspapers, During the Present Reign, and Partly From Tracts Published in the Reigns of Queen Elizabeth, King Charles I., King Charles II., and From Bishop Burnet's History of His Own times." Francis Maseres served as Attorney General in Quebec from 1766 to 1769, playing an active role in the affairs of the province and writing several pamphlets on the legal and political administration of Quebec. This volume contains articles on a wide variety of topics, including the English politician John Wilkes, American Independence, the slave trade, the fate of Louis XVI, the right of searching neutral vessels, war with France, and the governing of Quebec, as well as historical and literary subjects.
