Presumed Canadian first edition (no direct statement but title leaf verso notes 1918 copyright of American publisher George H. Doran Company) INSCRIBED, DATED, AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR ALONG WITH 1926 AUTOGRAPHED LETTER SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. i-xvi, 17-255 pages. Hardcover: H 20cm x L 13.75cm. Dust jacket obtrusively soiled and stained with modest foxing; tears and chipping at edges with long 13cm tear along rear panel's spine fold; dj now presented in a mylar Brodart protector. Dark olive cloth with mild staining; slender wear along boards' top edges; front board decorated with b/w pictorial paste-on; spine ends chipped with spine's gilt lettering flaked/dulled but still easily legible. Text block's top edge darkened; toning to deckle fore-edge and bottom edge. Strong toning to endpapers; author's four-line ink inscription "To. Mrs. W.L. Matthews | With the compliments of the author | A.C. Wood | St. Marys, Ont., 1918" on front free endpaper; varied foxing throughout. Slight stress points at quires but binding remains reasonably firm. Laid-in at front endpapers is author's two sheet (single-sided only) handwritten letter to Pauline on "Customs and Excise, Canada" stationery dated "Oct. 21/26" and concludes with "Sincerely yours | AC Wood" (which, in conjunction with the text, indicates the letter is to a long-time friend rather than an immediate family member). The book was acquired from a Selma, Alabama estate and, working on the assumption that the inscription surname goes with the letter's salutation, then the only geographically proximate Pauline Matthews is a Pauline Augustra Harrington Matthews (1875-1934) who was a resident of the town of Castleberry in Conecuh County, Alabama. The book featres autobigaohical essays on Canadian farm life and experiences while growning up in a rural agrarian setting. The eighteenth and final chapter regards bee-keeping.
