Nigel Mansell – whinger or lion? Il Leone as he was named by the passionate Italian fans when he drove for Ferrari. Nigel best answers for himself:
‘Every really hot lap relies on the brain and the body being in harmony and prepared, at certain points, to over-extend and over-commit. That is the only way to beat the Sennas and the Schumachers. It is I think, the act of balancing risk against the interest of self-preservation, while keeping everything under control.
‘Sometimes it can all go wrong...
‘Going into turn one at the Phoenix Oval, at 180 m.p.h., the car stepped out at the rear and slid backwards, hitting the wall. The gearbox punched a hole in the five inch thick concrete and the full brunt of the shock travelled through the car and was absorbed by my lower back. A cavity measuring fourteen inches by twelve opened up where the fat and muscle had been torn away from the bone and flesh...’
Two weeks later, Nigel Mansell was racing again; and that season he won the Indycar Championship.
Nigel is a hugely courageous, hugely talented Formula One champion and, with 31 Grand Prix victories, one of the most successful in the sport’s history.
This is his story...
