About this Item
The Caxton Club Press, Christchurch, New Zealand, 1934. Paperback. Thin card wrappers with dustjacket. Title plate pasted to front panel of dustjacket. Letter from "Charles to Colin" loosely inserted. The letter indicates that the book was a presentation copy printed on "a little hand press". The author is quite plausibly the poet and literary editor, Charles Brasch, and the reference to "Ian's anthology", is undoubtedly a reference to his friend, Ian Milner, the editor of the book. Colin is quite plausibly Charles Brasch's friend the artist Colin McCahon, "widely regarded as (New Zealand's) most significant artist". Light tanning to pages. A good to very good copy in a good to very good dustjacket. Includes poems by Jean Alison, Laurence Baigent, Charles Brasch, Eric Cook, Allen Curnow, A.R.D. Fairburn, Denis Glover, R.A.K. Mason, Ian Milner & Carl Straubel. In the foreword, the editors/contributors state "This is an arbitrary selection of verse published and unpublished by younger New Zealand writers. It has been termed new because we think its general tone marks a departure from that unfortunate tradition in which any rhapsodising over love, flowers or sunsets seems to pass for poetry". "THE CAXTON CLUB was a colourful group of students, writing enthusiasts and amateur printers which operated a small printing press in the basement of the University Clock Tower, Worcester Street, in the early 1930s. In 1935, renowned New Zealand literary figure Denis Glover, together with a partner, borrowed £100 for a new press and formed The Caxton Press. They set up in an old wooden shop at 129 Victoria St where they stayed for fifteen years." Source: https://my.christchurchcitylibraries.com/. Seller Inventory # ABE-1581183533406
