Add to basketStated First Edition along with Number Line to 1. This book is signed and inscribed by the author to Francine du Plessix Gray and Cleve Gray. The inscription reads: 'For Francine and Cleve, with profuse apologies to Sophocles, not to mention the blatant debt to Dr. Freud-- and with the enduring admiration and faithful love of the of their old friend James, 23 May, 2004' . Francine du Plessix Gray was a French-American Pulitzer Prize-nominated writer and literary critic. Cleve Gray was an American Abstract expressionist painter, who was also associated with Color Field painting and Lyrical Abstraction. Both the book and dust jacket are in excellent condition. The black covers of the book are exceptionally clean. The silver lettering on the spine is nicely bright. The cover edges and corners are in excellent shape, no rubbing. The page edges are very clean. The book is very solidly bound with nicely tight pages throughout, and nicely tight covers as well. The pages are also exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any instances of soiling. The white inside covers and end papers are perfectly clean too. I'm not finding any creasing on any the pages. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And the author's signed inscription is the only writing to be found anywhere. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It is very clean. I have always had it in a fitted protective cover. There are no tears. The flaps are also in excellent shape, very clean, no tears. There is one thin crease just above the rear flap's bottom corner. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. 'A comprehensive look at the life and work of the famous sculptor, Alberto Giacometti. It draws on Lord's personal acquaintance with the artist and his circle to explore his development from Surrealism to his signature elongated figures, his relationships, and his relentless self-criticism. The biography explores his relationships with figures like Picasso and Samuel Beckett, his close bond with his brother Diego, and his marriage to Annette Arm. It was nominated for the National Book Critics Circle Award.' From the dust jacket: 'One of the most candid and visionary biographies written of an artist in our time, Giacometti has come to be considered a classic study of the creative life. It delves deeply into the metrics of genius but at the same time deliberately veils the mythological origins of Giacometti's achievement. Mythic Giacometti is a daring and inventive study of these origins. Lord reveals the secret sources of Giacometti's destiny-- family legend, childhood memories, illnesses and injuries, crucial sexual encounters, intimations of mortality-- all of which marked him, in Lord's view, as a direct descendant of mythological heroes: Prometheus, Daedalus, Hercules, Ulysses, Oedipus.'.
