Naipaul is a Nobel-prize winning author, knighted by the British government in 1991, though it would take several years of writing to achieve such success. "The Mystic Masseur" would be written out of frustration with publisher André Deutsch, who saw promise in Naipaul's manuscript for the collection of short stories "Miguel Street", but pushed the author to write a novel first to gather some acclaim. Nevertheless, "The Mystic Masseur" would recieve critical acclaim upon publication in 1957, winning the 1958 John Llewellyn Rhys Prize and being the first of Naipaul's works to see a film adaptation in 2001. 1392472.
