Add to basketMurder in the Cathedral, TS Eliot, first edition, first print, Faber, 1935; inscribed two days before publication to the uncle of the woman who was Eliot's muse and object of intense and forbidden longing (as he was already married), Emily Hale. 'Inscribed for Dr. John Carroll Perkins by the author T. S. Eliot 11.vi.1935'. Emily Hale was brought up by John Carroll Perkins and her aunt Edith Perkins after her mother became unable to look after her. Eliot wrote more than 1,100 letters to Emily Hale between 1930 and 1957, once declaring: I would literally give my eyesight to be able to marry you. TS Eliot and Emily Hale stayed with Emily's uncle and aunt the Perkins during the summer from 1935 to 1939 in Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire, England. Book is in very good condition, with a tear to the hinge of the first front endpaper and a further tear to the top edge of the same page; tape mark to the top edge verso. Two small patches of abrasion to the front pastedown endpaper. Slight fraying to the cloth at the spine edge and light wear to the corners. Light pencil marks through book (erasable). Very good dust wrapper, not price-clipped, with a light marks and wear to the edges. A fascinating association copy; rare inscribed, especially in the month of publication. Please contact me for postage costs outside the UK as I will need to calculate insurance costs for this book due to its high value.
