First edition. Signed by Lionel Trilling on on the front free endpaper, inscribed to British critic and editor Raymond Mortimer, dated September 30, 1947. [viii], 310 pp. Publisher's blue cloth, spine lettered in orange. Very Good+ with bump to front board, light wear, bookseller wrote inscribee's name in pencil on fep in easily-erasable pencil. In About Very Good unclipped dust jacket with chipping along edges, rubbing. A nice transatlantic association between an American writer, Trilling, and a British critic, Mortimer, who hobnobbed with many of the most prominent English writers and aristocrats of his day.
