Weir, Andy. The Martian. First UK edition, limited to 1000 copies, signed and numbered '435' by the author on dedicated signing page preceding title page. London: Del Rey, 2014. Hardback, VG+ in unclipped dustjacket with very minor shelfwear to top edge. Red cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Binding strong and tight - book appears unread. 369pp., contents clean and bright. Mark Watney, a botanist on an expedition to Mars, is stranded after a disaster when the crew of the Ares 3, believing him dead, leave the planet without him. Andy Weir's accomplished first novel charts Watney's attempt to survive Mars's inimical conditions: limited air, insufficient supplies, and scarce food and water. Intercut with the first person account are chapters set on Earth, detailing mission scientists' attempts to affect his rescue, while Watney faces each problem as it arises with admirable savvy and technical know-how. The novel is research-heavy but, for the most part, succeeds in making Watney's plight not only believable but suspenseful as he battles against the odds for survival (The Guardian). About this title
I’m stranded on Mars.
I have no way to communicate with Earth.
I’m in a Habitat designed to last 31 days.
If the Oxygenator breaks down, I’ll suffocate. If the Water Reclaimer breaks down, I’ll die of thirst. If the Hab breaches, I’ll just kind of explode. If none of those things happen, I’ll eventually run out of food and starve to death.
So yeah. I’m screwed.
