[minor edgewear to covers, otherwise as-new]. Trade PB (B&W photographs, facsimile documents) INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the inside front cover: "To Hal, / Best Wishes / Always, / Bill Nelson / 6-16-99." A deep dive by a self-proclaimed "investigative journalist" into the post-murder lives of the Manson Family, with chapters devoted to each of thirteen individuals (including Charles Manson himself) and often enlivened with excerpts from interviews and correspondence with the subjects. Although there is plenty of information about the Tate-LaBianca murders themselves, the book is primarily about what all the various people got up to in the succeeding decades, and is essentially Nelson's own narrative about investigating their activities, which often involved establishing personal relationships with them. The author clearly worked hard at this, over the course of decades; among the people he was able to get close to was Sharon Tate's mother Doris. The book also touts a "world exclusive" interview with William Garretson, the only survivor of the Family's murder spree; only nineteen at the time, he was the caretaker at the Cielo Drive house, and was briefly considered a suspect. Warning: the book reproduces (although not very well) a number of quite explicit crime-scene photographs -- but at the same time, assures the reader that no "bad language" is contained in the book, as he has replaced all instances of such with "XXX." Toward the end of the book, he also veers into writing about the never-solved "Zodiac" murders that took place in the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1960s, although I'm not sure what connection he was trying to establish with the Manson killings. Nelson's c.v. as a journalist (apart from his obvious obsession with all things Manson) seems mighty thin, and as a narrative, the book is kind of all over the map, and sometimes veers into the arcane: if you want to know, for instance, all the individual dates between 1993 and 1996 that the still-incarcerated Charles "Tex" Watson had conjugal visitations from his wife (by means of which they were able to conceive four chidren), this is the book for you! Of some "associational" interest: the "Hal" to whom this copy is inscribed was agent Harold Gefsky, who was Sharon Tate's first agent when she moved to Los Angeles in 1962. Welcome to ReadInk (rhymes with "Dead Ink"), now in our 29th year of putting interesting books into the hands of interested people. **** Although I occasionally lapse into the "royal we" voice, ReadInk is just me, from one end of the pipeline to the other: buying, cataloging, customer service, shipping, you name it. Nothing here is automated, and every order or inquiry gets my prompt, personal attention. **** In describing a book's physical condition, I employ standard book-grading terminology (Good/Very Good/Fine, with various in-between gradations as appropriate) and do my best to avoid both excessive jargon and overly-finicky detail. My goal is always to present a faithful impression of a book's condition and appearance; significant flaws are individually noted, or if too numerous are succinctly summarized. **** Books are more than just physical objects, however: they are also intellectual/information vessels, and in almost every case I also include some information about a book's content in my listing, even if it's only a carefully chosen quotation from the dust jacket copy. (This may sound like a small thing, but take a look sometime and you'll see how amazingly few sellers bother with this, especially in the case of older fiction, which is one of my specialties.) **** I take great care (and pride) in my packaging of books for shipment; I figure it's my responsibility to ensure that each book I send out will withstand the rigors of the U.S. Postal System, and will reach its new owner in the same condition as advertised. Right of withdrawal
If you are a consumer you can withdraw from the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.
Information regarding the right of withdrawal
Statutory right to withdraw
You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to ReadInk, ABAA/IOBA, Los Angeles, California, U.S.A., +1 (310) 991-3391, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
- The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
- The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.
Shipping terms
We offer free Media Mail shipping for all domestic (U.S.) orders, and endeavor to keep our Priority Mail rates as reasonable as possible. International shipping in most instances will be via USPS First Class International mail, at the posted rates. Only on rare occasions do we request additional shipping charges, when warranted by the weight or value of the book. Our first priority always is TOP-QUALITY PACKAGING, for MAXIMUM PROTECTION of your book, and we will never compromise on this point.
