FIRST EDITION, FOURTH IMPRESSION (September 1929). Signed and dated "June 1931" by the author to title. Greene's first published novel was a best seller enabling him to give up his job at The Times and concentrate on writing full time. However, the commercial failure of his next two novels, together with a rejected biography of Lord Rochester, led to a personal crisis and, famously, experimentation with Russian roulette. Octavo. Original black cloth lettered in gilt to spine. Slight lean, small split in cloth at lower tip of upper board, covers lightly rubbed with a few tiny marks, edges dust-soiled, rear gutter a little fragile with a 2cm tear to endpaper. Dust jacket unclipped, faint vertical crease running length of front flap, a few nicks to top and bottom edges, slight toning to spine panel, but a lovely example overall. Borderline very good/near fine copy. [Wobbe A2].
