This is a very rare book. According to WorldCat there are no other copies in Ireland and only the National Library of Scotland and the British Library, St Pancras hold copies within the British Isles. It should Not be confused with a book of the same title by Freeman Wills Crofts (1879-1935), as this book was published Author Unknown in 1887 when Crofts was only 8 years of age. The author was in fact Samuel Thomas Heard (1835-1921), of Ballintubber, Kinsale, Co. Cork, East Indian Army Surgeon Major, inspired by Madras Horticultural Gardens he created Rossdohan gardens in Kenmare, Co. Kerry in 1873 utilising Furze as sea shelter emulating Lord Carbery at Castle Freke and son’s plant collecting in Abyssinia.” The Heard family go back many centuries in Kinsale, where they served as Justices of the Peace and M.P.s for Kinsale. In green cloth covered boards with faded gilt lettering to spine. Historical wear and damp staining all over. Binding tight. Several pages uncut. Pages bright and clean. Inscribed by the author on half title page "To Daniel Leahy with the kind regards of his old friend The Author". Under same is written Surgeon Major S. Heard J.P., presumably by Daniel Leahy. Errata slip at page 94. Overall a very good clean signed copy of a very rare book. Please examine all seller photos.…
