About this Item
In German. Presumed the First Edition (SD, 1949 on both the copyright and title page). I purchased this book directly from the library of the late John J. McCloy. It is in German. Google Translate offers the English translation as 'Put An End To Babel World Citizens.' I can't find another copy for sale anywhere on the Internet. The only reference to the book that I could find via Google is the following: 'THEORIES OF PEACE A Synthetic Approach to Peace by J Galtung, Cited by 23-- Montclair, Candide & Candide Meyer. Macht Schluss mit Babel. Weltburger! Affoltern 1949. 132p.' You'll notice the 'Montclair, Candide & Candide Meyer'. Relevant to this, when I first purchased the book some years ago I tried to research it and wrote the following note 'Can't find any info on book beside a Google reference to the author's German name-- Candide Meyer.' That is the signature in the inscription on the first page, the half-title page. As I don't speak or write German it's quite hard to make out the inscription. Oddly it seems to begin with 'S.E.' I don't know what that refers to. If you read German you should be able to decipher the whole inscription. I see the word kommissar which means Commissioner and McCloy's Title was High Commissioner to Postwar Germany. The inscription begins 'S.E. McCloy' and is signed C. Meyer. So you wouldn't expect that Thomas Mann would have been commenting on such a seemingly obscure book, but there was/is a separate pink leaflet in the book titled Aus Briefen an den Verfasser dieses Buches (from letters to the author of this book) which includes one from Thomas Mann, one from Dr. Emil Brunner, the Swiss theologian, and one from Prof. Dr. W. Ropke ('Wilhelm Ropke was a German economist and social critic, best known as one of the spiritual fathers of the social market economy'). The spiritual is referenced in the Mann 'blurb' as well ( 'Ich kann Sie nur meiner vollkommenen Sympathie mit Ihren Gedankengängen versichern.Notwending vor allem ist dieEntstehung eines neuen geistigen Klimas (I can only assure you of my complete sympathy with your train of thought . Above all, what is necessary is the emergence of a new spiritual climate). I've provided a photograph of the pink (or salmon) leaflet. So, the only copy of this mysterious book-- and it is inscribed to the former High Commissioner of Postwar Germany, John J. McCloy. As to the condition, you can see covers of the book in the photos. The black X through the red 'Krieg' isn't something that I or John J. McCoy did, it was original to the book, 'Krieg' meaning War and this book about peace and how to create and sustain it. The book is a soft cover, but it has a dust jacket, a jacket that has print on both flaps. Beginning with the book, the covers are in pretty nice shape, one light spot on the front, a little crinkling at the spine ends, a crease at both of the rear corners. The page edges are pretty clean. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages and covers as well. The pages are exceptionally clean, not finding any soiling. Bumps to cover corners did leave minor creases at the corners of the pages. There are no markings in the book. No attachments and no writing beside the author's signed inscription and two tiny pen marks (spelling corrections). You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. Conspicuous is the stain on the front cover. There are also tiny losses at the spine ends, toning and a little scuffing on the spine, handling soiling and a small water stain at the top corner on the rear cover, and two clean tears ( 1 3/4" off the bottom edge and 1 1/4" off the top ege at the juncture between the rear cover and the rear flap. The rear cover and rear flap are nonetheless securely bound. The flaps are in solid shape, clean except for a small bit of the aforementioned light water stain just over the top edge of the rear flap, not reaching the lettering. The jacket is fitted with a protective cover. Seller Inventory # 004108
