Scarce inscribed first printing of the Newbery Award Winner that mixes science fiction with fantasy, in which lab rats gain incredible abilities. Mom as heroine: widowed mouse Mrs. Frisby goes to great lengths to save her children in an adventure that uncovers her resilience and grit. Made into the animated film THE SECRET OF NIMH that lives vividly in the minds of late Gen Xers and early Millennials. As O'Brien died not long after publication, signed copies are quite uncommon. 8.25'' x 5.25''. Original tan cloth, purple-stamped vignette on front board, purple-lettered spine. In original clipped pictorial dust jacket, with Newbery sticker to front panel. Maroon endpapers, including triple fly leaves at front. Illustrated by Zena Bernstein in black and white throughout. [6], 234 pages. Inscribed by O'Brien on half-title: "To Anne Lyand (?) / with thanks for / the best phone call / I ever received. / Robert C. O'Brien." Book with slight lean, minor scattered foxing to text block edges. Jacket with a few small closed tears, light marginal toning with faint sunning to spine, bit of creasing to flaps. Text clean. Very good plus in a very good jacket. Seller Inventory # 55529
