Item description from seller

First printing of the true first edition - this copy SIGNED and personally INSCRIBED by the author on the title-page: 'To Stephen. Keep reading - and good luck in the exams. James Herbert' in black ink pen. ***Near fine in black cloth-covered boards. The boards are clean and unmarked. No bumps or creases. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Light foxing to the page block edges. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions (other than the author's). No creases or tears. Pages clean. Illustrated with small black and white line illustrated 'moon and cloud' chapter-headings. ***In a near fine colour-illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £9.95 net. The dustwrapper is complete, with no chips or tears, just a very tiny nick to the outer surface of the back panel. No creases. No fading. Dustwrapper bright. ***272 pages. 242mm x 154mm. ***'He had fled from the terrors of his past, finding refuge in the quietness of the island. And for a time he lived in peace. Until the 'sightings' began again, visions of horror seeping into his mind like poisonous tendrils, violent acts that were hideously macabre, the thoughts becoming intense. He witnessed the grotesque acts of another, a thing that gloried in murder and mutilation, a monster that soon became aware of the observer within its own mind. and relished the contact. A creature that eventually would come to the island to seek him out ---.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***First printing of the true first edition, in its original dustwrapper, in very nice, bright collectable condition. Hard to find signed and inscribed by the author. Of interest to collectors of the work of James Herbert and of horror fiction first editions. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
