Signed by Davies on the front endpaper. Davies was appointed the second U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union in 1936 by President Roosevelt and one of his jobs was to assess the USSR's military power and its role in world War II. This title was a worldwide bestseller and was the basis for the 1943 Warner Brothers movie starring Walter Huston and Ann Harding.
