364 p. Eight pp. photographs. Sprague (1909-94) recounts the confused and complicated origins of the brief Ute War in 1879, that resulted in the deaths of 30 men and the eviction and relocation of the Ute Indian tribe from their rich homeland in Colorado to the barren regions of Utah. Laid in is a typed letter signed (TLS) from Sprague on his personal letterhead. Dated January 22, 1976 and addressed to Jack Mark, the letter addresses Mark's question about the one of the families closely associated with the massacre. From the James S. Copley Library, with the San Diego newspaper publisher and philanthropist's bookplate to the front pastedown. Octavo. Original burgundy cloth binding, with gilt titles. Internally crisp and clean. The dust jacket, which has been backed with white paper, is price-clipped and a bit faded along the spine with some general mild shelfwear; otherwise very good. Seller Inventory # 60630
