Hardcover first edition, first printing. Stated First Edition with "1" present in complete number line. Not a book club, remainder or ex-library copy. Signed by Brooks on the ffep and inscribed "To Art, Magic from Somewhere within the [illegible] of Darkover" and dated "10/88". Light, handling-related wear along page block edges with previous owner's stamp on title page. Jacket shows minor wear along top edge of jacket (handling related). A near fine copy in near fine jacket. The jacket is clean, intact without tears or chipping with $16.95 price intact. A clean, square copy of a popular book nearly 40 years old. This copy was read once, carefully, then kept on a shelf. Brooks fourth book and the first book in The Landover series, and NY Times Bestseller. A wonderful copy for collectors because of the inscription. It was once authors' preference to inscribe copies to their fans, before the sadly modern trend of signature only. Only 15,000 were printed. Iconic dustjacket painting by Darrell K. Sweet. The book is currently in the screenplay stage with Steve Carell the front runner to play Ben Holiday. Ben Holiday purchases the magical kingdom of Landover for a million dollars only to learn that Iron Mark, lord of the demons, expects him to fight a duel to the death

a genuine, out-of-this-world magic kingdom, complete with fairy folk and wizardry, just as the advertisement had promised. But after he purchased it for a million dollars, Ben Holiday discovered that there were a few details the ad had failed to mention.
The kingdom was falling into ruin. The dragon Strabo was laying waste the countryside and the evil witch Nightshade was plotting to destroy everything. Ben's only followers were the incompetent Court Magician, Questar Thews, and Abernathy, the talking dog who served as Court Scribe. The Paladin, legendary champion of the Kings of Landover, seemed to be only a myth and an empty suit of armor. Of course, there was the lovely and devoted Willow -- but she had a habit of putting down roots in the moonlight and turning into a tree.
