He was most recently head coach at the University of Arizona for 25 years. He was also head coach at the University of Iowa for nine years and California State University, Long Beach for one season. Olson was known for player development, and many of his former players have gone on to impressive careers in the NBA after having played under him. On October 23, 2008, Olson announced his retirement from coaching. Olson was voted Pac-10 Coach of the Year seven times, made 5 Final Four appearances and won the 1997 NCAA championship with Arizona, where his team accomplished the feat of defeating three #1 seeds in the same tournament. In 2002, Olson was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. He also coached the US national team in the 1986 FIBA World Championship, the last U.S. amateur basketball team to win in international competition. His team defeated the U.S.S.R. 87-85 in the gold medal game, the first time the U.S. had won the world championship in 32 years. Very good in very good dust jacket. Signed by previous owner. LUTE OLSON, a native of Mayville, North Dakota, has been a college head coach the last thirty years. He has won more than eight hundred games while coaching at Long Beach City College, Long Beach State, the University of Iowa, and the University of Arizona. In 1997, Olson led the Arizona Wildcats to the NCAA championship and in 1988, 1994, 1997, and 2001 to the Final Four. His twenty-six NCAA Tournament appearances are the second most among active coaches, and his forty-five NCAA wins are also the second most among active coaches and tied for fourth all-time. As head coach at Iowa, Olson led the Hawkeyes to the 1979 Big Ten championship and five consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament. He was named national Coach of the Year in 1988 and 1990. In addition, Olson was the gold medal--winning coach of the 1986 World Championship teams, the latter of which was the United States’ last major international win with collegiate players making up the roster. In 2002 he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
