Signed 'June Barraclough' to the title page. Eighteen-year-old Georgy Crabtree is sent away by her father to avoid too close a friendship with her cousins' tutor, Edward Walker. She goes to the French provinces as English governess to the two children of a connection of her mother, Camille de Marceau. Georgy is very fond of poetry, and is thrilled to meet the famous poet Lamartine on holiday in Aix-les-Bain. She also becomes aquainted with two other young Frenchmen, and a boyish young woman who calls herself Capucine. Only after many emotional ups and downs will Georgy learn a little about love, and make the best decision about what to do with her life.
