JACQUES, Brian. The Long Patrol: A Tale from Redwall. Illustrated by Allan Curless. New York: Philomel Books, 1998. First U.S. edition, first printing. Octavo; 358 pp.; publisher’s hardcover binding; original color pictorial dust jacket. Inscribed by Brian Jacques, “My Pal Sean.” With the publisher’s Redwall fold-out bookmark and a flyer for the Redwall Reading Club laid in. As New in an As New dust jacket. Book has sharp corners and a tight, square binding; interior is clean and unmarked apart from the author’s inscription. Jacket is bright and fresh; not price-clipped. The laid-in fold-out bookmark and Redwall Reading Club flyer are also present. A notably complete collector’s copy. Note: First published in Britain in 1997, The Long Patrol appeared in this first American edition from Philomel the following year. It is the tenth book published in Jacques’s enduring Redwall series. The personal inscription, together with the two original promotional inserts, distinguishes this copy from unsigned or incomplete examples; ephemeral publisher’s materials are particularly susceptible to separation and loss. Importance: Centered on the young hare Tammo and the elite Long Patrol of Salamandastron, the novel combines military adventure, fellowship, sacrifice, and the defense of Redwall Abbey against the Rapscallion army. A New York Times bestseller, it remains a popular entry in one of modern children’s fantasy’s most durable series. This inscribed first U.S. printing, preserved in as-new condition with its unclipped jacket and original Redwall ephemera, is an exceptional collector’s copy.…

Review
Brian Jacques has proved time and time again that he has the ability to grab his readers by the throat and transport them into a world of fantasy and adventure that many writers of adult books would love to emulate. The Long Patrol, A Tale of Redwall, certainly proves the point yet again, but distinguishes itself by being perhaps the very best of all the Redwall books so far. Relying less and less on the old, familiar Redwall characters and more and more on the ingenuity and passion of younger blood, The Long Patrol will certainly win Jacques a fresh following while continuing to delight his existing army of fans. (9 years and over) --Susan Harrison
