Signed presentation copy from Benjamin Perley Poore to his daughter, inscribed "Mrs. Alice Poore Moseley, with the love of her father, The Author. Washington, June 12, 1882." [ii], 448, 6 pp. with frontis of the subject Bound in publisher's elaborately stamped brown morocco, lettered in gilt with gilt turn-ins and marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Near Fine, edge rubbed, bookplate of wealthy merchant Edward Strong Moseley on paste down. A lovely copy of the Union general and inventor's biography. Despite widespread ignominy for his defeats at Fredericksburg and The Battle of the Crater in the Civil War, today he best-known for his facial hair, as he was the inventor of sideburns.
