About this Item

A biography of John Burroughs in two volumes. Neither is signed, but laid into volume one is a one-page autographed letter signed (ALS) from Clara Barrus, John Burrough's close companion and the steward of his legacy as first assistant and then literary executor. It's addressed to the author of an article, "Burroughs, Unofficial Ambassador," that appeared inThe Christian Science Monitor, presumably in 1928 the year the letter was written. She writes "I think Burroughs himself would have enjoyed it." Googling doesn't turn up the article, but surely it could be found; the author is apparently anonymous, though Barrus leads with initials: "J.P.S.E." (another hand has then written "= O.S." . . . a mystery). On letterhead reading "Woodchuck Lodge, Roxbury-in-the-Catskills" the home of Burroughs, the missive finishes: " As the biographer of J.B., many things written about him drift to me, & many of them are inaccurate and, in other ways, irritating, so that it is a particular pleasure to come upon your article, every sentence of which I enjoyed." The letter is 6 x 9, very good, at one time folded four-ways, but now creased just across the middle. The upper left corner is torn away, but a shallow loss. The books are very good plus with only some light foxing to endpapers and on text block faces, interior pages clean and the dark green buckram boards excellent with just some light rubbing to corners. One or two marginal notes pencil. Each volume with a frontispiece photos of Burroughs, first young then distinguished in white beard. Both in good jackets with only printing on their spines, each with some chipping and tears, including a tear all the the way across the front panel of Volume Two s jacket. A nice letter from Barrus.

Her rendering of a "chimney swallow" (now known as a swift) serves as our logo and mascot: sleek and elevated, part sky and part city street. Rural Hours is mainly a project of writer and teacher Nick Neely. Along with a pair of MFA degrees in nonfiction and poetry, Nick has a Master's in Literature and Environment from the University of Nevada, Reno. He has much expertise and years of experience in the field of eco-writing. His first book, Coast Range, was a finalist for John Burroughs Medal for nature writing and his second book, Alta California--about a 12-week trek he made along the California coast--was a Los Angeles Times bestseller. Rural Hours is a young venture, but we aspire to be among the leaders in the field of rare and interesting eco-writing. We believe, emphatically, that environmental literature and its preservation is in the service of the preservation of the world. In addition to helping serious collectors and institutions build their libraries and archives, our goal is to curate a substantial "house collection" of environmental writing for public display on this site and beyond, one that shows the evolution of the genre(s). That will be a perennial work in progress. We hope to draw a deep, explorable map of environmental writing that traces the lineage and connections between authors and artists determined to render and protect the earth, locally and globally. At the same time, we would like to challenge the usual contours of the "environmental literature" canon and promote a more diverse and inclusive array of voices; in that way, our longterm goal is to excavate the past and curate toward the future. You have the right to cancel this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.

The cancellation period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the the last good or the last lot or piece.

To exercise the right to cancel, you must inform us, Wood River Books, P.O. Box 2226, 83333, Hailey, Idaho, U.S.A., +1 650-576-3484, of your decision to cancel this contract by a clear statement (e.g. a letter sent by post, fax or e-mail). You may use the attached model cancellation form, but it is not obligatory. You can also electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". If you use this option, we will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a cancellation on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.

To meet the cancellation deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right to cancel before the cancellation period has expired.

Effects of cancellation

If you cancel this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).

We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.

We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to cancel with contract.

We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
