About this Item
1928. First edition. xv, 285pp., a frontispiece and 3 other black and white illustrations. George Darley (1795-1846) was an Irish poet, novelist, literary critic, and author of mathematical texts. Friends with such literary luminaries as Charles Lamb, Thomas Carlyle, and John Clare, he was considered by some to be on a level with Tennyson in poetic possibilities in the 1840s, but in the words of famous literary critic George Saintsbury "he had the marks of a talent that never did what it had it in it to do." This account of his life, letters and work is written by Claude Colleer Abbott (1889-1971), an English poet, scholar and university lecturer. The book is bound in the original black cloth covered boards with a paper title label on the spine. The book is in excellent condition with a dent at the top of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with a spare title label at the end of the book and a previous owner's name label [Durham Poet David Burnett] on the front fixed endpaper. The author has inscribed the front free endpaper thus: "To A.D. Burnett with all good wishes from C. Colleer Abbott. 29 January 1965." no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper has some shelf wear and the spine is slightly sunnned. The top of the spine is lightly bumped and there is a small tear of about 1/8" on the top rear edge.
