Octavo, 566pp., plus Appendix (7pp.). About very good in the publisher's plain dark green cloth with paper label on the spine. Spine ends show some wear, front outer joint partly cracked (the board is holding strong). Foxing to the first and last few leaves. This copy SIGNED and inscribed by the author to a certain Jacob LeRoy (possibly LeRay?): "Jacob LeRoy / from his friend / The author." There is a LeRoy, New York, not far from Buffalo (where this book was acquired), and a certain Jacob LeRoy seems to have been an influential land speculator in Western New York during the time this book was published (he soon relocated to New York City, where the author lived and worked). William Leet Stone, the author, was a noted abolitionist and journalist, and also a Freemason. Not in Howes (though a few other Stone titles are noted in that reference). We found no signed copies of any of Stone's books in auction records, though a search through those records reveal his correspondence with John Quincy Adams, Daniel Webster, and other notables of the period.
