About this Item
Illustrated. 183 pages. Born in Carnoustie, Alex Smith came to the US in 1898. He was a versatile pro, excelling in club making, playing, teaching and greenkeeping. He won four of the day's majors, the US Open in 1906 and 1910 and the Western Open in 1903 and 1906. Interesting to note Alex won his first US Open by defeating his brother Willie, and his second US Open defeating his brother Macdonald! Two of his most noted pupils were Glenna Collett and Jerome Travers. Lessons in Golf is serious, valid instruction by this champion. It is enhanced by over 80 photographs, contains 8 pages on the stymie, club specifications, and importantly, two chapters on Golf Balls including the Pneumatic and the silk-wound. Smith begins these lessons by saying a student should seek a good professional for instruction. "But if this Statement is true, why am I writing a book; if the practical method is so much the preferable one, why am I putting these lessons down upon paper? This is a fair question, and one that I am bound to answer in the same spirit." The key is the word good as in good professional. This book is for those without access to such an instructor. Rather difficult to locate. This copy with typical loss to the white lettering on the cover and slight scratching, else a very nice copy. Contents clean and bright without underlining, marginalia, soiling, creases, tears, etc. THIS COPY INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR AT THE BOTTOM OF THE FRONTISPIECE PORTRAIT OF THE CHAMPION: "YOUR SINCERE FRIEND, ALEX SMITH." One of the most difficult US Open Champion signatures to obtain. Covers protected in mylar. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Seller Inventory # 201317
