Item description from seller

Octavo. lvi [2], 773; xlv, [3], 760; xlvi, [2], 862 pp., ports, illus. maps. First edition, first printing. Signed by Freeman on the front free endpaper of Volume I. Bound as issued in gray cloth with title in gold on the front covers and spine all in publisher issued dust jackets. Bindings are generally in Very Good condition, with minor sunning to the spines; Vol. II with a previous owner name on the front pastedown as well as some scant and scattered pencil marginalia; otherwise, clean; Vol. I and III are free of names or writing; dust jackets have tape repairs and reinforcement to the verso, but still present fairly well; Vol. I is price-clipped, the other two volumes retain their prices. Nevins describes this work as "[t]he ablest descriptive and evaluative study of the leading generals (and their campaigns) in Lee's army; massively documented, movingly written, highly authoritative, and faintly smug" CWB I, 30. Harwell states that it "supplements and complements R. E. Lee. It also stands in its own right as one of the great works of military history" In Tall Cotton 61. A fairly nice set of Freeman's critically acclaimed inquiry into the Confederacy following and expanding on Freeman's Pulitzer Prize-winning biography "R. E. Lee.".
