Add to basketNew York: Baker and Scribner, 1850. First Edition (BAL 508). Original green cloth, gilt-lettered, decorated in blind. Edited by Richard Henry Dana, Jr., a presentation copy from his father, Richard Henry Dana, Sr. (1787-1879): "Rev'd Derwent Coleridge, Principal of St. Mark's College, Chelsea, London -- With the respects of Rich'd H. Dana, Boston, U.S.A. May/'54." "Washington Allston was an American painter and poet.Allston pioneered America's Romantic movement of landscape painting" (Wikipedia). Tipped-in is a third person autograph note signed, from Allston (1779-1843) to â Mr. & Mrs. Adams,â (June 19, 1816), accepting an invitation, docketed on the verso in the hand of John Quincy Adams (1767-1848). Laid-in is a typed Letter, signed by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Dana, grandson of Dana Jr., to Rev. Herbert Boyce Satcher, whose bookplate is on the front pastedown. Dated Cambridge, Mass., September 13, 1848, one page, thirty lines, in the original mailing envelope. He believes the presentation inscription is from Dana Sr., ".a great admirer of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who had been a close friend of Allston and had traveled with him in Italy.Reverend Derwent Coleridge was the son of the poet Coleridge who had died in 1834.Allston's autograph letter [to John Quincy Adams] is of even greater interest. [He] was then serving as the American Ambassador in England.he gave his son the middle name of 'Francis' in honor of my great-grand-father, Francis Dana, whose daughter Washington Allston married (in 1830)". Allston's first wife, a sister of William Ellery Channing, had died in 1815. Light rubbing to some edges, spine cloth sunned, gilt dull. A Very Good copy.
