Add to basket1920. First edition. [iii], 130pp. This is a French edition, with the text in French, of an account of the life and work of Lazare de Baïf (1496-1547), a French diplomat and humanist. He published a translation of the Electra of Sophocles in 1537, and afterwards a version of the Hecuba. He was an elegant writer of Latin verse, and is commended by Joachim du Bellay as having introduced certain valuable words into the French language. The author, Lucien Pinvert (1860-1926), was a French lawyer and man of letters. The work was originally issued in thin card covers, and this copy has been rebound in paper covered boards with a leather spine and gold titling and decoration with four raised bands on the spine. The rebinding appears to be from the early 20th century and the original covers have been retained. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling on the boards. Front hinge starting from the top. There is a square patch of damage to the paper covering the front board where a small label appears to have been removed. This is an ex-library copy but there are few library indications and the contents are tight and clean although the pages are age-browned. There is a tear of about 3/4" on the fore edge of the original retained front cover. The only library marks appear to be two labels on the front fixed endpaper; two small stamps and a 'withdrawn' stamp on the following two pages; a stamp on the bottom of the title page; and a partially removed label on the rear fixed endpaper. It is possible that a small stamp has been missed elsewhere within the book. There is an inscription on the half-title page by the author and appears to read "A mon confrere[?] ????? Bien amical souvenirs - Lucien Pinvert".
